At this year's annual statewide Drug Endangered Children (DEC) Conference in Appleton last week, the Wisconsin Alliance for Drug Endangered Children recognized six counties and three tribes for their efforts in organizing and developing community programs to respond to the needs of drug endangered children.

In July of 2003, then-U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson convened a group of 15 academic thought leaders to share ideas for improving dietary intake patterns in the United States, and specifically for curtailing the spread of epidemic obesity.

What resulted was the creation of the ONQI (Overall Nutritional Quality Index) algorithim, which assigns a nutritional rating for foods from 100 to 1.  The higher the number, the better the food is for an individual.  Learn more about this fascinating project here.

Applications will be judged based on a broad range of criteria including leadership, innovation, benefits to underserved populations and benefits to quality of life and environmental quality.

The deadline for submissions is Nov. 21, and the awards will be presented at NACo's Legislative Conference in March 2009.
