Last week the National Association of Counties did an online survey, asking: "Is the country in a recession?" Most respondents, 81 percent, agreed that the country is in a recession; 15 percent thought otherwise, while 4 percent said they didn't know.

Every two years following the election of county supervisors, WCA staff hold district meetings around the state to inform membership of the services of WCA, give legislative updates and share other association information. In addition, elections are held at the seven WCA District Meetings for the WCA Board of Directors, Wisconsin County Mutual Board of Directors and the Wisconsin NACo Representative.
This year's meetings begin April 28, 2008 in the West Central District and run through May 7, 2008 in the Southeast District. The meetings are open to county officials and any other interested parties, with no need to RSVP.

NACo is collecting county resolutions (such as emissions-reduction targets), codes and ordinances, policies (such as green purchasing) and plans (such as strategic energy management plans) related to green government. NACo is preparing to launch an online searchable green database that can serve all counties.

NACo has announced three speakers for the July 11-15, 2008 Annual Conference in Jackson County (Kansas City), Missouri.
They include Brian Fagan, regarded as the world's leading archaeological writer, during the Opening Session. His recent book, The Great Warming, looks at climates of the past and what is in store for our future.
Michael Cory Davis, screenwriter and actor, will be featured at the July 14 session. His recent documentary, CARGO: An Innocence Lost, provides an inside look at human sex trafficking.
World-renowned historian Doris Kearns Goodwin will speak at the Closing General Session, July 15. Her history of Abraham Lincoln, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, is being developed into a feature film by Steven Spielberg and is set to star Liam Neeson as Lincoln and Sally Field as Mary. Over the past several years, Racine County Emergency Management has featured a monthly preparedness topic. There is a different area of emphasis each month. Each April, they observe Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week and they ask families and businesses to review safety tips, their emergency plans and to conduct a tornado drill.
