Volume 2, Issue 10
Restore the Partnership, the latest NACo initiative, seeks to reassert the role of county government as a legitimate and significant partner with the federal government in caringfor the needs of the nation.

At the 2008 Legislative Conference a set of legislative policy proposals came before the Board for adoption seeking, in many cases, to ease the negative impact of existing federal law or encourage legislation that would help local leaders to better serve their communities.

The policies adopted by the board this year clearly show the need for a restoration of the partnership.

For example, federal budget cutting has put at risk programs such as rural development, public safety and workforce development that significantly benefit local communities. Conversely, federal help is needed for programs that address critical infrastructure or social service needs at the local level, such as clean water and medical services for children.
