On March 1st, 2008, an article appeared in the "Milwaukee Journal Sentinel" on the Wisconsin Way, The University of Wisconsin System and Competitive Wisconsin.  The piece was written by John Torinus, the Chairman of Serigraph Inc. of West Bend.

"Three statewide organizations with far-reaching constituencies have mounted strategic initiatives that see Wisconsin's economic challenges in clear terms and then raise the bar on where the state should be headed.  They are the University of Wisconsin System, Competitive Wisconsin and a new entity called Wisconsin Way. Among the challenges they lay out in their separate planning processes are these:
  • Per-capita income disturbingly dropped to 5.9% below the national average in 2006.
  • If proper business accounting were used, the state ended fiscal 2006 with a $2.2 billion deficit.
  • The number of Wisconsin residents with baccalaureate degrees dropped to less than 25%, below such high-technology states as Illinois, Minnesota, California, Massachusetts and New Jersey.
  • Infrastructure investment over the next decade will require $60 billion to $80 billion in tax money at a time when the state budget is in distress."
