Below please find an article by WCA Legislative Director John Reinemann on the state budet that was signed into law this week by Governor Jim Doyle, including the impact of the bill on counties.
The 2009-2011 State Budget has been signed into law by Governor Doyle.
At our last WCA eNews report, the budget had been passed by both houses of the Legislature but a conference committee version of the bill had not yet been agreed to. Since that time action on the budget came very, very quickly.
The rush for action was motivated by a need for Governor Jim Doyle to sign the budget no later than June 29 if it were to be effective before the end of the state's fiscal year on June 30. |

Editor of Newsweek and author of Franklin and Winston and American Lion, Jon Meacham will be the featured speaker at Monday's General Session, July 27. Meacham was named "one of the most influential editors in the news magazine business" by The New York Times. A skilled raconteur and eloquent speaker, he understands important issues and events in all of their complexity and how they affect our lives.
Meacham is responsible for all day-to-day editorial operations of Newsweek and has written many cover stories. His bestseller, Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship, explored the fascinating relationship between the two leaders who piloted the free world to victory in World War II. TIME declared it "masterful," and The Washington Post proclaimed it "a memorable achievement."
His most recent New York Times bestseller, American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House (Nov. '08), which will be available for sale at the conference, won the Pulitzer Prize for biography and was cited as an "unlikely portrait of a not always admirable democrat, but a pivotal president, written with an agile prose that brings the Jackson saga to life."
